It comemorates the liberation of Senegal from the French colonization occured in 1960 with the ascension of Léopold Sédar Senghor – considered as one of the fathers of the Negritude movement – to the presidency of the independant Senegal:
The Senegalese Culture Week is linked to the fifth editions of Belo Horizonte’s Celebration of the Senegal’s Independance which comemorates with a lot of music, literature, dance and tipical food the role of the senegalese personalities involved in this conquest.
In June 2006, the second Senegalese Culture Week took place at the Centro Cultural da UFMG with actions dedicated to the comemoration of the 100th anniversary of Senghor’s birth.
